Piedmont
is not far from the highest point in Missouri, Taum Sauk Mountain; the
biggest spring in the world; the beginning of the Old South with its
rich swamps, such as Mingo National Wildlife Refuge; Johnson's
Shut-Ins State Park; Elephant Rocks State Park; the historic Civil War
remnant, Fort Davidson; the big springs country, including the biggest
of all, Big Spring at Van Buren.
Old
Greenville Days and the Blackpowder Rendezvous are celebrated
annually at Old Greenville, which is located just off US Highway 67,
in the Greenville Recreation area, 2 miles south of Greenville. Old
Greenville Days is celebrated as a living history of the town that
once stood there. The annual Blackpowder Rendezvous is an excellent
opportunity to travel back in time and relive the history of
pioneers and Native Americans.
Probably the biggest happening in the Clearwater area is the Ozark
Heritage Festival held at Piedmont each October. Ellington's Spring
Fever Festival, usually the second weekend in May, is a major event
too.
Gads Hill is the
scene of the first Missouri train robbery by Jesse James. Union
Pacific Resources now has a quarry there to mine granite. |

The Freedom Fest
at Annapolis in October, and the Wayne County Saddle Club horse show
in June and rodeo in August are also big events. Smaller events
include nature programs at Sam A. Baker State Park, and programs by
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the lake recreation areas.
